The African Leadership Forum expresses its outrage concerning the Executive Order issued by President Donald Trump that imposes a travel ban on nationals coming from seven countries, the majority of which are African, and all of which are countries with Muslim majorities.  The Trump Administrations denial that the ban is based on religion and race, under the guise of protecting the United States from terrorism, is disingenuous and patently false.

None of the countries on which the ban is imposed have produced nationals that have killed any United States citizens in the past 40 years; and, none of the countries that have been responsible for producing terrorists that have killed United States citizens are covered by the ban. Not coincidentally, all the countries that have produced terrorists that have killed United States citizens are countries in which President Trump has business interests.

United States is a country of immigrants.  That is the very basis of its founding – to escape the tyranny of oppression, and that is our distinguishing feature in the world.  People of African descent and Muslim faith have been in the United States longer than almost every other ethnic group in the United States.  The African American Leadership Forum supports the rights of law-abiding citizens of every nationality and faith to come to our country and we vigorously oppose the President’s racist, Islamaphobic and xenophobic agenda, masquerading as a national security measure.

We applaud the ruling this past Friday, February 3, 2017, by U.S. District Court Judge for the Western District of Washington (state), James Robart, which temporarily restrained enforcement of the travel ban; and, we support the 9th Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals, which on Sunday, February 5, 2017, upheld Judge Robart’s ruling, refusing to lift the restraint.
